Francesco La Camera, new IRENA Director General<\/p>\n
Francesco La Camera, Director General for Sustainable Development, Energy and Climate at the Italian Ministry of Environment, has been elected Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) by the inter-governmental agency\u2019s assembly meeting in Abu Dhabi on Sunday 13th<\/sup> January, 2019. He will take office on 4th<\/sup> April, 2019 and serve for a period of four years. La Camera is taking over the post from Kenyan Adnan Amin.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Created in 2009 and based in Abu Dhabi, the IRENA brings together 160 states. A further twenty or so are in the process of applying for membership. The agency\u2019s mission is to promote renewable energy on a global scale and exchanges of information between its members.<\/p>\n Francesco La Camera received the backing of the European Union, having led Europe\u2019s negotiations at the COP20 in Lima. The senior Italian civil servant had also been in charge of his country\u2019s delegation at the three previous COP summits.
